ExxonMobil Fawley is the UK’s largest integrated petrochemical complex, producing a range of energy products, lubricants and chemicals that are vital to our everyday lives.
The complex covers 3,250 acres and provides employment for 2,500 valued staff and contractors. This includes skilled engineers, technicians, maintenance and support staff, almost 99% of whom live within 30 minutes of the site. Generations of the same families have worked at the complex over the years and this gives the work force a real sense of community. Our production process starts with crude oil imported from countries all around the globe to Fawley Marine terminal, which handles 2,000 shipping movements each year, and is the longest privately owned jetty in Europe at 1.5km long. We then convert that oil into petrol, diesel and jet fuel, which we distribute via a 700 km pipeline network to our distribution terminals and airports; lubricants that are eported worldwide; and chemicals that, if you take a look around your home or workplace, form over 8000 products that may have been made possible by ExxonMobil Fawley.
Energy Products: ExxonMobil Fawley produces petrol and diesel under the famous Esso brand to power an estimated 1 in 5 vehicles on the UK’s roads. Alongside petrol and diesel, we also produce aviation fuel for commercial airlines, and LPG (liquid petroleum gas) that is an important fuel for agriculture, businesses and homes in rural locations where the mains gas network is not available.
Lubricants: We help to make lubricants in many forms that are used in domestic, transport and industrial applications. Vital to consumers and commercial customers alike, these lubricants keep machinery running smoothly, enhancing efficiency and extending operational life. You will find these lubricants in many applications from factory machinery to wind turbines, engines to bicycles and even your garden equipment.
Chemicals: ExxonMobil Fawley also manufactures chemicals that are used in the production of many products, which enable our everyday lives. From supporting pharmaceutical manufacturing and medical equipment; to personal hygiene and cosmetic products, paint and car parts to clothing and textiles, many will start their life as chemicals right here at Fawley. Furthermore, our specialised Butyl Rubber is used in tyres, and also to make an estimated 50% of the world’s supply of Covid vaccine sealing stoppers.
As a maintenance apprentice, you can get involved and learn how we produce our products and you are quite likely to find yourself working at height on the Refinery from many of our towers and platforms. What a view!
