The apprenticeship is a three-year scheme that’ll help you achieve a whole list of qualifications. We’re talking about awards that are recognised in the industry too.
Your first year will be focusing on completing a range of practical training modules that will cover a wide range of engineering disciplines and you will be mainly based at Southampton College but you will have one day per week at the Fawley Site. These will include skills such as welding, fitting, electrical, machining, mechanical and electrical maintenance and process logic control, you will gain this knowledge through hands-on experience. In short – you’ll learn by doing and you will start to acquire the skills, knowledge and behaviours that will allow you to successfully complete your apprenticeship. We’ll make sure you learn all the theory needed to back up your newly acquired expertise, too. You will embark on a level 3 BTEC qualification or a level 4 HNC, depending on your previous qualifications.
However, the majority of your training and key skills development will be learnt first-hand at the Fawley refinery during the next two years, focussing on your specific trade. For example you could be working on:
Machinery: Stripping and rebuilding pumps; Electrical: Wiring up a motor; Instrumentation: Calibrating a trasmitter.
The second year will see you move around the different areas of the Fawley site to gain a better understanding of how we work, whilst still completing your BTEC or HNC at college on a day release basis.
And moving into your third year, you will be full time at the Fawley Site and will continue to learn everything that you need to in order to allow you to complete your Apprenticeship.
So, after the three years you’ll have stacked up a range of practical training modules, a BTEC Level 3 or an HNC and successfully completed an Apprenticeship following the Engineering Maintenance Technician (EMT) Apprenticeship Standard.
